This post is about how to make a small living room look bigger.
How To Make Your Small Living Room Look Bigger:
1. Add Floor To Ceiling Curtains
SHOP MY FAVORITE CURTAINS HERE | SHOP CURTAIN CEILING TRACK HERE
Adding floor to ceiling curtains will draw your eye up, and make your space feel 10x larger! Using a ceiling track to hang your curtains will create the illusion of a tall room. Aim for curtains that just skim the floor or ones that are 1-inch above the floor.
2. Select A Low Back Sofa For Your Small Living Room
Using a low back sofa will help the room to appear larger and allow your eye to go through the entire space without obstruction. If your sofa is in the center of the room, a low back couch will make an even bigger difference! If a low back sofa isn’t your style, opt for some armless chairs or armless/backless ottomans.
3. Mount Your TV!
SHOP PULL-DOWN TV MOUNT HERE | SHOP FRAME TV HERE | SHOP TV FRAMES HERE
Mounting your TV on a wall will create more floor space and eliminate the need for a TV console! Mount it above your fireplace, or if you don’t have a mantle consider mounting a slim entertainment system to keep the floor clear.
4. Add A Large Rug In A Small Living Room
Aim for a rug that goes about 1-2 feet behind your furniture. This will make a small living room feel much bigger and anchor the space! This is my favorite rug that we own!
5. Use Light Colors To Brighten The Room
Brightening up the room will help the space to feel larger too! You’re not limited to white paint though. Any bright shade will open things up. Color drenching is also one of our favorite ways to make a room feel significantly larger!
6. Mix In Mirrors To Open Up A Small Living Room

Mirrors help open up any space by creating the illusion that the room continues. You can add a horizontal mirror or if you’re limited on wall space, add a vertical mirror like the one above!
7. Add Open Bottom Furniture
Open bottom furniture opens up a room by allowing you to see through the space. If your room is open-concept, using open bottom furniture will help to merge the spaces together! Make sure you use a mix of solid and open bottom pieces, so your room feels balanced.
8. Decorate With Large Artwork

It may surprise you, but using large pieces of decor will actually help your small living room feel much larger! The key is using very large pieces of decor, but less pieces.
9. Use Lots Of Lighting In A Small Living Room
A variety of lighting sources will brighten up the room and draw your eye to different corners of the room. A combination of overhead lighting, a floor lamp, and a table lamp is best.
10. Add Trees To The Space
SHOP FAUX FIDDLE LEAF FIG TREE
I love bringing the outdoors in with some plants! It makes the living room feel like an extension of the outdoors which creates the illusion of more space. Faux trees are also a great way to decorate a room without taking up too much floor space! This is my favorite thin and tall, faux olive tree. It’s always insanely affordable and looks super realistic – you can buy it here!
11. Use Floating Shelves To Save Space In A Small Living Room
SHOP LIGHT WOOD FLOATING SHELVES
Using floating shelves will help to keep more furniture off your floor while also giving you more places to store stuff. I love these light wood ones from Amazon!
