This post is about moving house.
Moving House: Checklist
1. Sell & Donate Unwanted Furniture
You don't want to skip this step! Look at the furniture that you have now and see if it would work in your new space. If it doesn't, sell and donate it now! This will save you so much time and effort during your move.
2. Change Renters or Home Owners Insurance Policy
This is a super easy step! All you need to do is contact your insurance company to let them know you are moving. Adjust anything on your policy that is needed for your new home. Out of all items on this moving house checklist, this one takes barely any time!
3. Begin Packing Room By Room
Packing room by room is much easier! I always start a few weeks out with rooms that aren't used as much. I typically do the kitchen last because we use it too often.
4. Contact Utilities Company To Arrange Date
Don't forget to do this, or you will be wasting money! You can do this fully online for most services or call. All you need to do is decide on your shut off date & enter in your new home address.
5. Contact Wi-Fi Company To Arrange Date
Make sure you figure out what Wi-Fi is in service for your new home. You will need to shut off your current one. Make sure you return your equipment too, so you avoid getting a charge.
6. Change Your Address For The Post Office
You can typically do this all online or call if you have any questions. Make sure you swap your address to ensure no mail is getting delivered to your old address.
7. Prepare Open First Box
Everyone needs to do this before your move! Make sure you pack paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, a change of clothes, and anything else you need on your first day/night.

8. Change Address On Your Driver's License
Swap out your address on your license! You can typically do this online, so you don't need to waste time at the DMV. You don't need to do this immediately, but it definitely needs to be done shortly after your move!
9. Update Car Insurance With New Address
If your car insurance and home owner's insurance is with the same company, you can do both at the same time. Make sure to adjust your new address because this could impact the cost and coverage with your new area.
Moving House: Tips
10. Start Saving Boxes Months Before
A few months before your move date, make sure to save every box that gets delivered! Not only will this save you a ton of money on moving boxes, but it will also save you time! You can start packing early as you acquire more boxes, and you will save time not having to buy boxes!
11. Donate Before Packing
Get rid of all the clutter and everything you don't use! I reccommend doing a closet clean out to get rid of all the clothes that haven't worn recently. Donate or sell any furniture pieces that you won't be using in your next home. This will save you time packing stuff that won't be used in your new home!
12. Use Your Tote Bags & Luggage Before Buying Boxes
Before you start buying boxes, use the packing materials that you have already! Out of all moving house tips, this one probably gets skipped the most! Use up all the packing resources you have like tote bags, duffle bags, suitcases, etc. instead of boxes. You will be surprised at how much you can fit in all of these storage items!
13. Open-First Box
I've definitely skipped this step before, and it's a nightmare if you do! This box should be the first box you open up. Keep water, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates/utensils, pet supplies, and more! This box is intended to make your move seamless.
14. Hangers & Garbage Bags For Clothes
I've been using this moving home hack since I first moved into my college dorm room! The amount of time that this hack saves you should convince you to do it! Keep all of your clothes on their hanger and put a hole in the bottom of the garbage bags to stick the hanger through it. By doing this all of your clothes will stay clean, and you just need to hang them up in your new closet!

15. Keep Clothes In Dresser Drawers
Instead of taking all of your clothes out of the dresser drawers, leave them in there! All you need to do is remove the drawers and cover the top, so your clothes don't get dirty! If you follow this hack and the garbage bag hack, it will take you 5 minutes to get all your clothes put away in your new home!

16. Mattress Bags
I had no idea that mattress bags were a thing until after I moved! This is one of the best solutions to avoid getting your mattress dirty. If you wrap your mattress in a mattress bag, you won't need to worry about it dragging on the floor. A mattress bag will save you time in the long run, and it's super easy to put on and take off.
17. Use Towels For Packing Fragile Items
Before you buy a bunch of bubble wrap, use what you have at home! Whenever we are packing up our kitchen, we use towels to wrap plates and glassware. This will keep your dishes secure while utilizing the packing materials you already have!
18. Wrap Up Kitchen Utensil Tray
Don't waste time separating everything in your kitchen utensil tray. Keep everything together and wrap it up so nothing falls out. This will save you time packing and unpacking because all you need to do is place it in your new drawer after unwrapping it!
19. Take Pictures Of Boxes Once Packed
I am totally guilty of not doing this, and I regretted every single time I moved! Realistically you are not unpacking all of your boxes when you first move. Once you start packing up boxes, snap a picture of each one after they are labeled. This will be a great reminder of what is actually in each box to save you time finding the right one to open!
Moving House: Supplies
Don't forget to add this to your moving house list! I didn't know mattress bags existed until after I moved, and I am jealous of anyone that knew before me. These are perfect if you're wanting to keep your mattress clean and protected.
You can never have too much packing tape during this crazy move! I ran out of packing tape often on moves. I recommend adding more than enough to your moving house packing list!
These are perfect for all of your bigger furniture pieces! Placing these sliders underneath your furniture will make moving furniture so easy! Not only do these make the process easier on your body, but it also will save you a ton of time!
You can never have too many storage containers! I love buying some new ones during a move to save money on boxes that will end up in recycling. Storage containers are great because you will reuse these for storage in your home.
These are perfect for cleaning out before you start packing! I also use garbage bags for my hanging trick that I mentioned under moving house tips. You will also use them when you are cleaning in the end!
Don't forget to add a labeler to your list! Make sure you are labeling all of your boxes to ensure unpacking is done in an organized manner!
You would be surprised at how much bubble wrap you need for all of your fragile items! I always recommend using up your towels first to save money on bubble wrap. You will want to make sure you have enough for all of your kitchen dishes as well as fragile decor pieces.
I love using stretch wrap when I don't want to fully unload or unpack something! For example, I use stretch wrap for my utensil holders, so I don't need to take all of them out to replace them after.
This is probably the most used moving house packing item out there! Don't forget to get enough boxes. I love the boxes at lowe's, but we have also used Uhaul ones before too!
Moving does not need to consume your time and stress you out! This post was intended to make your move the easiest it has been! Whether your moving house or moving apartments, this list works for all!
