Weeknights tend to run together at our house. Make a quick dinner, ask the notorious question “what do you want to watch”, clean the kitchen, repeat. You know the feeling… When you’re stressed with a million things on your plate, it can feel like a mountain to try to plan anything during the week.
That’s where I come in! Each week I post the ultimate guide for everything you need to “plan” a perfect weeknight in. My goal is to take all the mental lifting off of you, so that you can spend a weeknight fully connecting with someone you love!
We’re keeping it simple & nostalgic with this week’s weeknight-in. Basically ALL the drive-in theaters near me are now closed (sad!), so we’re doing the drive in movie at HOME! Here’s everything you need to plan one yourself! Let’s get into it!
1. Drive-In Movie At Home Materials
This week’s list is super simple & you should have everything at home already!
- Blankets (1 large, 2 cozy)
- Pillows (firmer is better – to act like a seat!)
- A tray for holding your snacks/drinks
- Laptop & a streaming platform of choice

2. Theater-Worthy Food & Drink
We’re keeping it simple & classic. Gather all the movie snack goodies: theater box candy, soft drinks, & of course popcorn. I like to add a little Trader Joe’s cheesy seasoning to mine!
If you want to do something different, try a popcorn sampler. Sweet, salty, and something unique.
If you’re aiming for budget-friendly, the dollar tree has tons of theater box candies for $1.25. My vote is always at least one thing chocolatey & one thing sour. Maybe switch it up & pick out one type of candy for each other!
3. Convo Starters
After a long day at work, it can feel laborious to be the catalyst for a good conversation even when you’d love to have one. Below are some convo starters to pair with this weeknight-in.
- What is a movie you wish you could watch again for the 1st time? Why?
- Would you rather see a new movie at home or at the theater?
- If you could live the life of any movie character who would it be? Why?
- What’s a memory you have that feels movie worthy?
- Have you ever or would you ever go to the movies alone?

4. Setting Up The Drive-In Movie At Home
Prep:
- Consolidate all your materials early for a quick set up.
- Pick your movie ahead of time to eliminate decision paralysis.
Set-Up:
- Add all your pillows and blankets into the back of your car, the more the better.
- Stock up all the snacks into the car.
- Turn on your movie & snuggle up.
During:
- Enjoy your snacks, the movie, & good conversation.
Notes
An obvious reminder: if you plan to keep your car in the garage while watching your movie, make sure the garage door is open or do not run your vehicle. We kept ours off, but left the garage door & trunk open because it was raining which added such a cool ambiance.
This specific weeknight-in idea is intended for those nights where you have a little less time, but still want to prioritize connection.
I hope you enjoy the the change from your day-to-day. If you try out this weeknight-in, please tag me (@ahousetohomey) in your posts & let me know how it went for you! Happy intentional connecting!
