Color Drenched Room: Color Ideas
How to Color Drench a Room (Step-By-Step Guide)
Step 1: Choose the Right Color for your Room

This is arguably the most important step! The color you choose will shape the entire mood of the space. Depending what room you are color drenching, consider the adjacent rooms if it's an open concept. Don't be scared of going dark because the color will be more concentrated when the entire room is painted.
Step 2: Select a Paint Sheen Strategy
Color drenching doesn't mean using only flat paint. Varying the finish subtly can add dimension without changing the color. We chose eggshell for the entire room, but for the trim we did a high gloss. This allows the trim to be more durable. Ceilings are typically painted flat or matte, but we decided on eggshell because it was close enough. Keeping the ceiling and walls eggshell saved us money in the long run.
Step 3: Clear & Protect the Room
Remove all furniture or push it to the center of the room. Cover floors to avoid any damage from paint hitting it. Tape plastic over any fixed elements you're not painting (light fixtures).
Step 4: Prep the Space for a Color Drenched Transformation
Make sure you have no holes or cracks in the walls. Fix all of those before you start cleaning. Once the walls are prepped you will want to clean all surfaces, so there is no dust or dirt. This could impact how the paint sticks. Remove or tape off outlet covers, hinges, and hardware (unless you are painting them too - which I recommend)!

Step 5: Paint Every Paintable Surface in the Room

This is where the color drenching magic happens. Instead of just walls, you're taking the color everywhere! Make sure to include walls, ceiling, trim, crown molding, interior doors, and window trim. The order doesn't matter too much because it's a super forgiving process.
Step 6: Touch Ups & Clean Up
Inspect all surfaces in good lighting. Do touch-ups with a small artist brush or roller. Carefully remove tape & reinstall outlet covers (painted to match if desired).

Our Color Drenched Room
We decided on using Valspar Sharkfin paint color, and we have no regrets! We made sure to identify our sheen strategy early on, and this saved us money. Most people will keep the ceiling in a matte or flat finish, but we decided to keep our walls and ceiling both in eggshell. This saved us money since we didn't have left over paint.
Don't be scared to start your color drenched room! I promise it will be worth it. Your biggest decision will be deciding on the color, but I made sure to share my personal favorites.
