Weeknights tend to run together at our house. Make a quick dinner, ask the notorious question “what do you want to watch”, clean the kitchen, repeat. You know the feeling… When you’re stressed with a million things on your plate, it can feel like a mountain to try to plan anything during the week.
That’s where I come in! Each week I post the ultimate guide for everything you need to “plan” the perfect weeknight in. My goal is to take all the mental lifting off of you, so that you can spend a weeknight connecting with someone you love!
We’re making some magic for this week’s weeknight-in. I’m HP-obsessed, but even if it’s not your thing I promise you’ll still enjoy this WNI. Here’s everything you need to plan a Harry Potter themed movie night yourself! Let’s get into it!
1. Harry Potter Themed Movie Night Materials
- Harry Potter Movies – Or access to a streaming platform. HBO Max has all the movies!
- Blankets & Pillows – Here’s my fav for 2 tall people!
- Foldable Mattress – We use this one for our transformable guest bed & for movie nights on the floor!
- A Computer/Mobile Device
- Cream Soda – I used Olipop for a healthier option!
- Butterscotch Sauce
- Whipped Cream
- 1 Piece Paper
- Moody Lighting – We use Hue Lights (more on this later)!

2. Wizard-Worthy Food & Drink
What’s a themed Harry Potter movie night without a themed snack? Plus, any excuse to make butterbeer – count me in. You can opt for a classic recipe if you’d prefer, but this modified healthy-ish version is one of my favs.
Easy Healthy-ish Butterbeer
Ingredients:
- 2 Cans Olipop Cream Soda (Regular is fine too!)
- Butterscotch Syrup
- Whipped Cream (We went with the lite option.)
- Carmel Sauce (Optional)
Directions: (Yields 1)
- Add about 1/4 of the can of cream soda into a glass. These are my favorite soda can style glasses!
- Mix in 2 TBS of butterscotch syrup until combined.
- Add the remainder of the soda and lightly stir. Do not over-stir or you’ll lose all the carbonation.
- Top with whipped cream & a caramel drizzle.
Don’t forget to make room for your “fantastic beasts” to join you for movie night. 🙂
3. Convo Starters That Build Connection
After a long day at work, it can feel laborious to be the catalyst for a good conversation even when you’d love to have one. Below are some convo starters to pair with this weeknight-in.
- What spell or magical ability would you love to have in real life?
- Which house do you think you would belong to, and what qualities do you possess that align with that house? Do you like these qualities about yourself? Why/why not?
- Which Harry Potter character do you relate to the most, and why?
- If you could visit any location in the wizarding world, where would you go?
- Which Harry Potter character do you think would make the best friend in real life, and why? What matters most to you in your friendships?
4. Setting Up The Harry Potter Movie Night At Home
Set-Up:
- Set up your movie viewing spot & pull up whichever movie you’ll be watching! My vote is always start with #1, & make it a weekly marathon!
- Set your lighting. We did the flickering candle setting on our hue lights! It feels like we’re in the great hall with the floating candles above us. Here’s a blog post that explains more about our moody lighting!
- On your computer, head to https://www.wizardingworld.com/ & click on the “hogwarts sorting” tab.
- Make your butterbeer!
During:
- Take the quizzes on the website to find out your house, your wand type, and your patronus. They’re all personality-type quizzes (sort of!) & it was so fun to compare our results and talk about their accuracy. I’m a Hufflepuff (& proud) & Cory’s a Gryffindor…
- Do any other HP themed activities. We tackled this Marauder’s Map puzzle which is one of my favorite puzzles of all time.
- Enjoy your butterbeer, movies, & good convo!
