Why Facebook Marketplace Is Better Than Thrift Stores (Sometimes…)
Facebook marketplace is a gem for a couple reasons. First, many of the sellers are on a time limit. Either they are purchasing new furniture and need theirs out, or they’re moving. Either way, they want to move the product quickly which gives room for negotiation and good prices.
I’m also no stranger to a good facebook stalking session. If I’m picking up an item from someone, I like knowing a little bit about the previous owner. It gives you a chance to ask them if it’s a smoke-free home, pet-free home, etc. It’s not guaranteed that you’ll get the truth, but I’d say 90% of the time I’ve bought from really honest people.
Most antique or thrift stores are dedicated to selling vintage/antique items. The pricing for unique & one-of-a-kind pieces are typically a lot higher than you’ll see on facebook marketplace.
How To Know If A Facebook Marketplace Seller Is Scamming You
If you’re feeling a little uneasy about a facebook marketplace sale being legit, run through these 5 questions before purchasing.
- How old is the seller’s facebook page? If it was created within the last month or so, I never move forward.
- Is the price unreasonably cheap? No damage or reason to justify the low price? It might be too good to be true.
- Does the seller have any reviews? If so, what do they say?
- Are they asking you to pre-pay to hold the item? If so, RUN.
- Is the image a stock image? This isn’t a tell-tale sign, but if the seller only has stock images listed I always ask for more pictures. If they won’t provide them I don’t move forward.
Always go with your gut!
Staying Safe When Picking Up Vintage Furniture From Facebook Marketplace Sellers
There are lots of different things you can do to keep yourself safe when purchasing from facebook marketplace. I have a few of my top recommendations below!
- Meet at a popular location, or bring someone with if you’re picking up at their house.
- Ask for the item to be outside or in the garage if possible. (This can’t always be done depending on the seller’s age, etc. Always use your best judgement.)
- Pickup during daylight hours when possible.
- Share your location and plans with trusted friends/family.
- Negotiate before pickup when possible to avoid conflict.
